Genetics
Purposeful Genetics. Functional Cattle.
At DeChron Farm and Cattle Company, we believe great cattle are not defined by a single number, trait, or pedigree. They are the result of thoughtful selection, proven genetics, sound management, and an unwavering commitment to producing cattle that perform where it matters most — in the pasture.
Our registered Angus breeding program is built around a balanced approach to genetic improvement. We utilize proven pedigrees, performance data, EPDs, genomic information, artificial insemination, and embryo transfer as valuable tools in our breeding decisions, but we never lose sight of the animal standing in front of us.
Phenotype and functionality remain at the foundation of the DFC breeding program.
Our Breeding Philosophy
Our goal is not to chase extremes. It is to build complete Angus cattle that combine the traits important to commercial cattlemen, seedstock producers, and ultimately the beef industry.
Every mating is approached with purpose.
We seek genetics that can strengthen structural soundness, fertility, maternal ability, fleshing ease, foot and udder quality, environmental adaptability, carcass merit, and economic value while maintaining the phenotype and practical functionality we expect from DFC cattle.
The result we pursue is a balanced animal — one capable of performing in the pasture, reproducing consistently, remaining productive for years, and contributing value throughout the beef production chain.
Phenotype Matters
Numbers help us make informed decisions. They do not replace good cattle.
We place significant emphasis on visual appraisal and functional phenotype, including structural correctness, sound feet and legs, body capacity, overall balance, eye appeal, and the physical traits necessary for cattle to remain productive in a real-world environment.
For females, udder quality and maternal functionality are especially important.
For us, phenotype is not simply about appearance. It is about function, longevity, and usefulness.
Balanced Performance
We use EPDs, genomic testing, performance information, pedigrees, and industry indexes to identify genetics capable of moving our herd forward.
Rather than selecting for one trait at the expense of another, we evaluate the complete genetic profile.
Calving ease, growth, maternal traits, docility, foot quality, carcass characteristics, feed efficiency, and Angus $Value indexes all have a place in our selection process.
Our objective is balanced genetic progress — cattle that offer meaningful performance without sacrificing fertility, structural integrity, adaptability, or longevity.
Maternal Strength
The cow is the foundation of every successful cattle operation.
Our genetic decisions place considerable emphasis on the traits required to build productive, efficient females: fertility, maternal ability, sound feet and legs, quality udders, moderate and practical mature size, fleshing ability, and the capacity to maintain condition and rebreed under real-world conditions.
A female should do more than produce an impressive calf.
She should earn her place in the herd year after year.
Carcass Value with Function
We believe cattle can combine maternal quality and functional phenotype with meaningful end-product value.
Carcass merit and economically relevant traits are incorporated into our breeding decisions with the goal of producing cattle that create value from pasture to plate.
Marbling, ribeye, growth, efficiency, and Angus $Value indexes are considered as part of the complete genetic picture — never in isolation and never at the expense of the fundamental traits that make cattle functional.
Using Technology with Purpose
Modern genetic tools give cattle producers opportunities previous generations never had.
At DFC, we use artificial insemination, embryo transfer, genomic testing, EPDs, performance data, and carefully selected pedigrees to accelerate genetic progress and create planned matings with specific objectives.
These technologies allow us to access proven genetics from throughout the Angus breed and combine them with females selected to complement their strengths.
Technology helps guide our decisions.
Stockmanship determines how we use it.
Built for Our Environment
Genetics must perform outside of a spreadsheet.
Our cattle are developed within a forage-based management system in Georgia, where heat, humidity, forage conditions, and the demands of year-round production place real pressure on cattle.
We value cattle that adapt, maintain condition, shed efficiently, breed back, travel soundly, and remain productive.
That is why environmental adaptability and functional efficiency are not secondary considerations in our program — they are part of our genetic selection process.
The DFC Standard
Every generation represents an opportunity to improve the next.
Our breeding program will continue to evolve as better information, better genetics, and better tools become available. What will not change is the standard behind our decisions.
We will continue selecting cattle with purpose, evaluating them honestly, and pursuing genetics that combine phenotype, fertility, maternal function, performance, carcass merit, and economic value.
Because at DeChron Farm and Cattle Company, our goal is not simply to produce better numbers.
Our goal is to produce better cattle.
Driven by Excellence. Built in the Pasture.
